Is Wikipedia a reliable source of information?

"Wikipedia is about as good a source of accurate information as Britannica, the venerable standard-bearer of facts about the world around us, according to a study published this week in the journal Nature."

Where do you go when you need to know something?  In this age of information and technology, there are a lot of choices out there.  Which websites should you trust as reliable sources?   How can we know the information they provide is accurate and true?

One of the most popular websites in the world, Wikipedia has been controversial since it's start.  We've all had at least one person tell us not to trust Wikipedia, because anyone can edit it.  However, does that really mean it's less accurate?

  2. Wikipedia can freeze changes on the website to keep certain information from being changed. I have heard of the Encyclopedia Britannica before today, I have used it for a lot of school work. The article was written in 2015, so yes I am sure the information on Wikipedia has most likely become more accurate. In Wikipedia's article, they say that there have been studies to test the accuracy of the information put on Wikipedia. They also say that there was an article from Nature about how in 2005 the information on Wikipedia was very similar to the information on Britannica. These articles make me believe that Wikipedia is a pretty reliable source, and so is Encyclopedia Britannica.

  4. 1. There are over 132,000 active registered editors on Wikipedia. In addition to this, there are many people who contribute and edit articles. Based on studies conducted by Wikipedia, the mass majority of this collection are collaborators who edit and contribute on the bases of factual evidence. "Vandalisers" are in the minority. The mass majority are typically able to quickly edit and fix the mistakes and spam made by said vadalisers. In addition, controversial articles are usually made through collaboration, and the editors come to a consensus prior to editing/creating the articles. Therefore, when false information is inserted into Wikipedia sites, the large number of editors are usually able to correct it.

    2. The name is familiar but I did not know anything about it lol

    3. I believe that Wikipedia has become more accurate since then. This is because over time, Wikipedia has accumulated more popularity and editors. Based on the algorithm that I explained in answer 1, Wikipedia is more accurate today.

    4. Wikipedia states that it is not a very reliable site. It recommends users to use it as a "dive in to research," taking the information on it with a grain of salt. As far as whether the information on Wikipedia is correct or not, incorrect information is typically able to be corrected quickly because of Wikipedia's self-cleaning abilities and the mass majority of its editors.

    5. Yes. I used to believe that Wikipedia was a highly credible source, but now I know that this is not always the case. It came as a surprise to me that truly ANYONE can edit it. It can still be reliable, however, because of the mass of people that edit and create articles.
